The
Prototype: The EMD SD45 is a six-axle diesel locomotive
first built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division from
1965 thru December, 1971. After initial teething problems
were dealt with, the SD45 went on to sell a total of 1,260
units to American railroads.
It was good on gas, producing more power per unit of fuel
(3,000 kW) than its SD40 counterpart which claimed only 2,240
kW. SD45s remain in active service, some being rebuilt
and
operating for lease companies. The Montana Rail Link maintains
the largest active US fleet of SD45's currently.
