Prototype Information:
 First
produced in 1966, the 3000-horsepower EMD SD-40 was
one of the most popular locomotives ever produced
by EMD.
Although
designated as a "Special Duty (SD) locomotive,
this versatile engine eventually saw all types of
duty for a large number of railroads..
What
this locomotive lacked in power, she more than made
up for with her dependability in service--which explains
why the SD40's were so popular with the prototype..
More than 1200 of these units were produced by EMD
for railroads throughout North America.
Many SD40 units are still in active service today,
either with the original purchaser or a second hand
user.

Model
Features :
While
this will be the third production of SD40's by Kato
(previously offered in October 1990 and May 1994), these
models will be updated to include the following features:
Bright-white™
LED headlight.
Printed numberboards.
MU hose detail.
Magnetic knuckle couplers.
DCC Friendly--designed for simple drop-in installation
of digital decoders..
All
new truck sideframes molded with high-mount or low-mount
brake cylinders as appropriate for the prototype.
All
models will be equipped with Kato's new profile blackened
metal wheels (similar to those used on the smooth-running
P42's).
All
models are equipped with the powerful KATO five-pole
motor with dual brass flywheels.
