A
bit of history regarding Tropicana. The origins
of the company go back to an Italian immigrant, Anthony
T. Rossi. In the 1940's, he sold gift boxes of fruit
to stores such as Macy's and Gimbels. The business
expaned to providing such hotels as the Waldorf-Astoria
with quality fruits and the name was changed to Fruit
Industries. The company continued to grow and the sale
of frozen orange juice concentrate provided the largest
profit margins. Through additional purchases and expansion
as well as marketing and processing
innovations (
his company developed
flash pasturization in 1954) ... it now became possible
to offer "fresh" orange juice taste from a pure not-from-concentrate
product. And Tropicana Pure Premium was born. To get
his product to market, the Tropican Juice Train was
created ... the original run being a weekly trip from
Florida to Kearny, NJ. By 1971 they were operating
two 65 car
trains per week. In today's world, the CSX Tropicana
Juice Trains have received numerous awards for their
fuel efficiency and dependability.
On another front, Tropicana (as the commpany was renamed).
went public in 1969. In 1978 Anthony T. Rossi sold
his shares to Beatrice Foods. In the 1980's the company
was acquired by The Seagram Co., Ltd. and in 1998 Tropicana
was acquired by PepsiCo.
Of note, with growth, Tropicana began "blending" their
orange juice with juices imported from Brazil. This
has lead to recent issues with reports of contamination
from chemical sprays used on Brazilian crops that have
been outlawed in the US. Only Florida's Natural brand
remains as the only company that sells 100% US juices.
